If you are 16 and have just received your provisional moped licence, you will need to successfully complete a Compulsory Basic Training course. Once you have acquired your CBT certificate (form DL196), you can ride alone displaying ‘L’ plates. Remember that your DL196 is only valid for two years. We would advise that you remain at learner status until you are 17 and then put in for your practical bike test on a 125cc geared bike.

If you are 17 or over you can choose whether to complete your CBT on an automatic scooter or a 125cc geared motorcycle, Once you have acquired your CBT certificate (form DL196), you can ride alone displaying ‘L’ plates. Remember that your DL196 is only valid for two years. Compulsory Basic TrainingThe most important day of your riding career is conducted to DSA guidelines and usually takes 5–7 hours to complete. ALL equipment is provided free of charge. All you need to bring is your two part Driving Licence, a bottle of water and a sense of humour.

Car drivers who passed their test before Feb.2001 already hold full moped entitlement, but we still recommend you complete a CBT course

CBT is a ONE day course designed by the Driving Standards Agency to ensure that all novice riders have the basic skills prior to taking to the road.

WHAT’s INVOLVED

During the day we will cover the following elements:-

A.             CBT introduction. Everything from what to wear and why.

B.             On site training. Controls, maintenance, using the stand etc.

C.             On site riding. Controlled braking, slow riding techniques etc.

D.            On road training. Pre-road ride discussion, ie; what to expect.

E.             On road riding. Out on the road in radio contact.

A correctly run CBT will take around 6-8 hours to complete, it is a fun day but with a serious message.

CBT is NOT a test, it is an assessment where mistakes can be corrected.

The DSA allow 4:1 training on site but only 2:1 training on the road.

Before your CBT, READ & LEARN the Highway Code, as it enables road-users to interact safely.

Towards the end of the 2 hour minimum road ride, you must show us that you can ride safely and considerately, before being awarded your DL196 certificate (Certificate of Completion of an approved Training Course).
