If you are 16 and have just received your provisional moped licence, you will need to successfully complete a Compulsory Basic Training course. Once you have acquired your CBT certificate (form DL196), you can ride alone displaying ‘L’ plates. Remember that your DL196 is only valid for two years. We would advise that you remain at learner status until you are 17 and then put in for your practical bike test on a 125cc geared bike.

If you are 17 or over you can choose whether to complete your CBT on an automatic scooter or a 125cc geared motorcycle, Once you have acquired your CBT certificate (form DL196), you can ride alone displaying ‘L’ plates. Remember that your DL196 is only valid for two years. Compulsory Basic TrainingThe most important day of your riding career is conducted to DSA guidelines and usually takes 5–7 hours to complete. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

CBT is a course designed by the Driving Standards Agency to ensure that all novice riders have the basic skills prior to taking to the road.

FACTS

CBT’s are provided by an Approved Training Body (ATB), whom are closely monitored by the DSA.

Quality training is not cheap – so DO NOT automatically go for the cheapest available.

A correctly run CBT will take around 6-8 hours to complete.CBT is NOT a test, it is an assessment where mistakes can be corrected.

The DSA allow 4:1 training on site but only 2:1 training on the road.

Without reasonable knowledge of the Highway Code it is impossible to ride safely.

Towards the end of the 2 hour minimum road ride, the student must demonstrate safe riding.

Compulsory Basic Training course fee = £125

Holders of a Full car licence receive a £5 discount.
